When shopping for rings for your engagement or your wedding, you will quickly discover that you have many different options to choose from. For instance, there are several different gems you can use when designing your engagement and/or wedding rings. But there are also a rather wide variety of metals that you can consider when designing your rings with your jeweler.

Some of your choices include gold, tungsten, titanium, palladium, and finally, the metal which is the main subject of this website: platinum. Generally speaking, the two most popular types of metals for engagement rings and wedding rings tend to be gold and platinum. Even within these larger choices, however, there are also some smaller choices that you will need to make. For example, if the two of you choose to get gold wedding rings, you can choose between yellow gold or white gold. (Alternatively, you could also decide to get platinum rings or even two tone rings.) Yellow gold is perhaps the most traditional choice for wedding rings, and has been for a very long time.

Many people find yellow gold to be very warm looking, and therefore a great way to symbolize the eternal nature of marital love. Some people also feel that yellow gold is the most flattering color for their skin type, or they just like the way it looks. The most common types of yellow gold engagement rings and wedding rings are either fourteen karat or eighteen karat. (Twenty-four karat is the purest type of gold. It is very bright and brilliant looking, but because it is so soft it is not practical for use in rings or other types of jewelry.) When a gold ring is not twenty-four karats, this means it has been blended with other metals. Some of the metals used for this purpose are zinc, nickel, copper and/or nickel.

As you might have already guessed, gold rings made of eighteen karat gold tend to be somewhat more expensive than gold rings made of fourteen karat gold. Both types of gold rings are widely considered to be good choices for engagement rings and wedding rings. The higher the number of karats, the brighter and more brilliant the gold, but the lower the number of karats, the stronger and more durable the piece will be over the long haul, so if you are choosing between fourteen karats and eighteen karats for your wedding rings, know that whichever choice you make has significant advantages.
